Re-setting the Course:

Some time after completing graduate school and receiving her certification in rehabilitation counseling, Cate was working as a Middle Manager and Therapist. She realized that she was already “burnt out” in the prime of her life. She quietly sought the support of a colleague who, like others before him, gladly offered his advice. At the time, she was contemplating an offer for employment as a Career Services Director at a small technical college. He advised that she should remain working as a Mental Health Counselor because he believed that she would regret making the switch. Although she benefited from his support immensely, she still chose to pursue the college position. She followed her passion and never looked back again.

Staying on Course:

For four years, as a Career Services Director, Cate enjoyed the privilege of guiding college graduates into their first paid career positions. During this time, she also met her future employer. He approached her several times to discuss joining his team as an Employment Specialist serving clients of the department of vocational rehabilitation. Despite her happiness at the college, Cate eventually decided to take a leap of faith and took the risk of working with him on a pure commissioned basis. During final negotiations, Cate asked her employer if he would be OK with her eventually starting her own business. He expressed his support and that was all that she needed to hear.

Change Of Course (The Companies) :

After a year with the placement services company, Cate met with her supervisor to discuss future goals and plans. In the midst of discussions, they briefly spoke about her eventually "going out on her own", but he discouraged her from doing so at this time. He  provided several good reasons why she should wait. She listened and took note of his concerns and then promptly went home to work on her business plans anyways. Three months later, her supervisor sat down with her again, but this time to explain that their referral source was drying up; he advised her that her position would soon be phased out. It turned out to be the best time for her to be starting her own business.

Cate founded the not-for-profit, Change Of Course, Inc in order to serve as a vendor for the department of vocational rehabilitation and other community programs. She created the for profit company, Change of Course, LLC, in order to extend the same high caliber outcome based career coaching and placement services to the general public. “People have been asking me for years how they could use my services and now I am able to tell them that they can hire  me directly”.  This business venture has provided her the opportunity to extend her services to anyone who feels ready to “set their GPS (goals, passions and strengths) on Career Success”.  Perhaps you will be one of them.
